More and more parents and students are turning to online high school programs as opposed to the traditional high school experience. Their increased popularity has caused state and private schools across the country to add more online high school programs. From the 2002/3 to 2009/10 school years, 23 percent more school districts added online learning options.
Before online high school courses became more popular, some states only allowed military families and special needs students to join their online high school programs. Today, almost all high school students can choose online learning. Texas Tech University’s K-12 program, for example, is a fully online prep school.
Why consider an online high school program? For some students, it’s the chance to travel with family. For others, it’s a more safe and effective way to learn. The flexible schedule works well for students who have a job. It also works for students who are pursuing athletic or theater opportunities. Online high school programs can be very helpful for these groups, but that doesn’t mean they’re a last resort. Especially with all of the options available today, students should expect the same out of online high school programs as they do of traditional schools.
In that spirit, we’ve researched and ranked the top 40 onlinehigh school courses below.
Methodology
- Affordability: Cost per a single semester course (a half credit hour) for a full-time student. Annual tuition costs, when no per-course cost was given, were reduced to reflect a single semester course for a student taking five courses per semester.
- $0-150 = 5 Points

Is an online high school diploma the same as a traditional high school diploma?
It’s all about accreditation. Accreditation is key for online high school programs. It lets other high schools know that the curriculum meets a certain standard. It also looks good on college applications. Finally, employers will check for it as well. Accreditation is important because it acts as a stamp of approval.
Accreditation helps online high schools show their academic strength. It can make or break an application process. Without accreditation, transfer and/or acceptance is less likely. If the school is accredited, then the diploma will be seen as valid. This will increase the chance of credit transfer, college acceptance or job placement.
When it comes to accreditation, there’s a notable difference between regional and national status. Regional accreditation is more highly accepted to transfer credits, college application and so forth. National accreditation is still far better than nothing, but it is not seen as the same as regional accreditation.
How much parental involvement is required for online highschool?
Several factors can determine thelevel of support that your son or daughter will need for their online highschool courses, including:
- Prior experience with homeschool
- Scheduling demands

- Learning style and preferences
Since each student’s situation is unique, it’s difficult to pinpoint exactly how involved the parent would be. The general idea when it comes to online schooling for high school students is for the parent to assume the role of facilitator.
On an ordinary school day, for example, the student will review the material and complete all assignments, quizzes and activities to the best of their ability. If the student has a question throughout these tasks the parent is encouraged to intervene.
Is online high school bad for social development?
It is easy to think that homeschoolers are not well socialized. Students taking online classes can be just as well socially adjusted as students from a traditional school. Students who are taking online high school courses may have more time to spend on outside activities where they will have a chance to spend time with peers.
Many online high schools encourage students to interact with each other socially. Dances, fundraisers, clubs and even sports teams can be offered. Some of the best online high school programs have on-site labs, physical education courses and other opportunities for students to meet in person.
As long as homeschooled high school students have a chance to interact with their peers there is no real risk of socialization issues.
Do online high schools accommodate special needs students?
The Individuals with Disabilities Acts requires all public schools to provide accommodations for special needs students. Most of the schools on this list, however, are not publicly funded. Even those that are do not fall neatly under these legal requirements because of the online environment. Parents should not assume that even an accredited online high school will have accommodations for the special needs child.
Some high school online programs are specifically for students with disabilities. Others have accommodations built into their curriculum. Some have no accommodations whatsoever. Finding the best online schooling for high school students with special needs is a matter of research and personal consultation with a program official. An individualized plan can be created to best assist the student.
In many cases of special needs students, parents can assume a more active role in teaching and supporting. Parents – who best understand the disability – can make sure information is absorbed and retained.
Are these free online public high schools really free?
In most cases, parents and students can expect the same costs from both free online public high schools and traditional public high schools (minus transportation and the obvious). As long as the student is eligible to apply, based on location and meeting the academic requirements, then tuition at online public high schools is free. Tuition is not the only expense. Students may be required to pay for one or more of the following items and/or fees:
- Applicationfee
- Sciencelab materials, art supplies, calculators, etc.
- Pitchingin for outings, events, etc.
- Supplementalmaterial not offered, but recommended by the program
- Duesfor on-campus clubs and sports
Each free online public high school may have some extra costs associated with it. By definition, however, none of the schools in this category charge for tuition.
Is online curriculum really less challenging than traditional curriculum?
Online high school classes are just as challenging in terms of the curriculum. In addition, the flexible start times and due dates require students to be more self-motivated. Online high school is neither less or more challenging. It just provides for a “different” learning environment.
Will I struggle getting credits to transfer to/from another high school or to college?
This answer goes hand-in-hand with the issue of accreditation that was brought up in the first FAQ above. The short answer to this question is no, youshouldn’thave a lot of trouble transferring credits from your accredited online high school to another high school or college. Youshouldn’thave trouble transferring credits from conventional high school to your online high school. Why “shouldn’t” instead of “won’t”? It’s still up to the specific school.
Every school is different in terms of which credits they will accept. If you want to make sure that your credits will transfer to a college or another high school, just ask. Check on the school website for a credit transfer policy, and submit a transcript request form to start the process. If you do your research ahead of time, it’s just a matter of paperwork. Remember: accreditation is important.
Will I lose out on physical education as an online high school student?
As obesity rates continue to climb, physical education is a concern for all of us – not just those taking online high school courses. Thankfully, there are two options available for homeschooling parents who want to encourage their children to embrace exercise.
First, check the school catalogue for physical education courses. Many of them do offer physical education courses. Better still, some online high school programs have access to their own gyms and equipment for students who can make the trip to campus.
If neither of the above options are possible, then it is up to the parent to provide physical education. There’s nothing wrong with unstructured play and activity. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Service’s “Presidential Youth Fitness Program” is an excellent choice for students to ensure that they meet and exceed the recommended activity levels.
Is there a required age range for online high school students?
Most school websites are unclear about required age. They assume incoming students will be of traditional high school age. A conversation with the school is usually the best way to find out. The short answer, however, is that many online high school courses allow adult learners, and some may not.
In the case of The Keystone School, which made number 26 on our list, adult learners are not only accepted but encouraged. The Keystone School offers adult learning programs for returning students who want a degree from an accredited online high school over a GED. The emphasis in this program is on self-paced, flexible courses because many returning students often have childcare, work and other obligations to attend to.
Do I have to be highly tech-savvy to get the most out of online high school?
Even for students who are not tech-savvy, online high school programs are becoming more and more accessible. Students can simply login and start learning. The same goes for submitting work, checking grades, asking instructors for help and so on. In most cases, non-tech-savvy students will be just fine.
That being said, there are plenty of online high school programs that rely heavily on the latest technologies, which wouldn’t be ideal for non-tech-savvy students. Will I miss out on hands-on learning experiences like chemistry labs as an online high school student?
Lab sciences like chemistry, physics and biology are an important requirement for the majority of college degree programs. For example, The University of Michigan requires three years of lab sciences for acceptance, as do many other colleges. Very few colleges go lower than two years.
