What to read after Fourth Wing whilst waiting for Iron Flame. - Book + Border | Book and Lifestyle Blog (2024)

Rebecca Yarros’ incredible fantasy novel Fourth Wing took the fantasy world by storm earlier this year. It’s hard to miss its gold and black cover on BookTok and every other blog and social media platform out there. With its hot tempered dragons, shadowy yet sexy male character and kick-ass female MC, Fourth Wing has it all. But what do we read after Fourth Wing and whilst we wait for Iron Flame? Fear not, I have a little something for you…

Haven’t read Fourth Wing yet?

Check out my Fourth review to know why I loved this book so much.

So, you’ve read Fourth Wing and now you have a book hangover. I get it. I was right there with you those long months ago and I was left feeling bereft and empty, longing for Iron Flame in the autumn. But I’ve got you covered. Book hangover or no, I have pulled together a list of books to read after Fourth Wing that’ll fill that romantasy (or just straight up fantasy) shaped hole in your heart.

My recommendations are ‘tagged’ based on what aspect(s) you enjoyed from Fourth Wing to help you find your next read. Think dragons, spicy romance or high stakes trials. Look out for the ‘Read this if you…” line under each one! Without further ado, here are my recommendations…

1. From Blood and Ash, Jennifer L. Armentrout

Poppy’s life has never been her own and classed as a Maiden, life is solitary. Never to be touched or looked upon, talked to or experience pleasure. The entire kingdom’s future rests on Poppy’s shoulders. Waiting for the day of her Ascension, she would rather be with the guards, fighting back the evil that took her family, than preparing to be found worthy by the gods. But the choice has never been hers. Yet, when Hawke a golden-eyed guard honour-bound to ensure her Ascension, enters her life, destiny and duty become tangled with desire and need. With the kingdom in turmoil and fighting against the rise of the fallen kingdom, the line between what is forbidden and what is right becomes blurred.

2. Dragonfall, L.R. Lam

Years ago, humans betrayed dragons. They stole their magic and banished them to a dying world. Centuries later, their descendants worship dragons as gods. But the ‘gods’ remember, and they do not forgive. Orphan Arcady has scraped a life on the streets of Vatra, dreaming of a life among nobility, and revenge. When a choice Arcady makes pulls the last male dragon, Everen, from his slumber and traps him in a human body, Arcady finds that dragons who make promises may in fact wish to kill them. Caught between spells and the a fights to save themselves, the two grow closer only to find that both their worlds may be at risk.

3. The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins

Within the nation of Panem, the flawless yet harsh and cruel Capitol, is surrounded by twelve outlying districts. To keep the districts in line, the Capitol enforces a yearly tribute of one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death. All for live TV. Suzanne Collins’ YA novel is one of the most iconic pieces of work in YA dystopia.

For nearly three decades, vampires have waged war against humanity. Now with Gabriel imprisoned by those very monsters he vowed to destroy, he is forced to tell his story.

5. A Court of Thorns and Roses, Sarah J Maas

Romantasy lovers, get ready for the ride of your life. A Court of Thorns and Roses or affectionately shortened to ACOTAR, catapulted Sarah J Maas to the big leagues within the fantasy world. Heralded as one of the leading authors for romantasy (with plenty of spice!), ACOTAR will absolutely fill that romantasy void after Fourth Wing.

Inspired by Beauty & the Beast, A Court of Thorns and Roses follows our mortal female MC Feyre, a huntress who finds herself taken hostage by a faerie and stolen away to the lands of Prythian to pay a debt.
