McLaren's 2026 F1 Academy Lineup: A Step Towards Diversity and Controversy
McLaren is making waves in the racing world with a groundbreaking announcement! Next season, McLaren will field Ella Lloyd and Ella Stevens in the F1 Academy, with Ella Hakkinen, daughter of legendary two-time F1 World Champion Mika Hakkinen, joining their driver development program. This move has sparked excitement and curiosity among fans and industry experts alike.
The team has committed to a second car for the all-female F1 Academy series, with Ella Lloyd returning for her second season, accompanied by the highly anticipated Ella Stevens. Lloyd is currently third in the 2025 standings, boasting an impressive win and four additional podiums. Meanwhile, Stevens, the 2025 British KZ2 Karting Vice-Champion, is the only woman to have won in the UK's premier karting class. She dominated the F1 Academy Rookie Test in September, leaving no doubt about her potential.
McLaren's increased involvement in the series is a joint effort with their long-term partner, NEOM. Both cars will be operated by Rodin Motorsport, with the second McLaren Racing entry, driven by the young talent Stevens, bearing the name F1 Academy McLaren Oxagon.
And this is the part most people miss: Ella Hakkinen, at just 14 years old, is already making waves in the karting world. She is one of nine karters supported by F1 Academy's 'Discover Your Drive' initiative within the Champions of the Future Academy Program. Hakkinen's addition to McLaren's junior roster makes her the youngest talent, and she'll be testing single-seaters in preparation for a potential 2027 debut.
Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren Racing, expressed his pride in the team's progress towards inclusivity: "We still have work to do to increase female representation in motorsport, but our efforts are paying off." He continued, "We want to send a clear message to all the talented women in karting, driving, engineering, and other roles that motorsport is inclusive and eager to build on the momentum we've gained."
Brown also acknowledged the importance of partnerships in creating opportunities for women in the sport, thanking NEOM for their collaboration. With three promising female drivers now in their development program, McLaren is leading the way in fostering diverse talent.
