Why You’ll Love This Activity

- Variety – These printable worksheets include a variety of things to do including a paper bag puppet, headband, coloring page, matching game, I-Spy game, and cootie catcher craft.
History of Groundhog Day
Groundhog Day, celebrated on February 2nd, originated from ancient European weather lore and the Christian Candlemas Day. German immigrants in Pennsylvania adapted the tradition, using a groundhog instead of a hedgehog to predict the weather.
The first official celebration in America was in 1887 in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, where the legend of Punxsutawney Phil, the weather-predicting groundhog, began. According to tradition, if Phil sees his shadow, it means six more weeks of winter while no shadow indicates an early spring. This quirky custom has grown into a widely celebrated event across North America, drawing thousands of visitors annually.
Groundhog Day Paper Bag Puppet
What you’ll need to make this craft:
- 8.5″ x 11″ paperorcardstock
- Paper bag
- Glue or glue stick
- Scissors(these are my favorite pair!)
- Crayons (if you want kids to color the groundhog in first)
Then you simply cut out the parts of a groundhog. Glue the head to the bottom of the bag where it folds over the main part of the bag. Glue the body on the main part of the bag. Then kids can put their hand in the bag to make the puppet talk.
You can print the black and white version and give it to kids as a coloring page before turning it into a puppet.

Cootie Catcher Craft
The cootie catcher craft, also known as a fortune teller. It’s a fun game for kids to play together. The construction of it requires following directions and folding, so it’s best for kids who are a little older or who have help.

All you have to do is print a copy of the cootie catcher page and the directions, then follow them step by step to fold it correctly!
