How To Make Our Bacon Wrapped Tater Tots with Cheese Recipe:

Start by making sure that your tater tots have been thawed to room temperature and then preheat the oven to 400 degrees.

Now, take the thawed tater tots and cut them in half lengthwise and the place the cheese cube inside of the two tater tot halves.

Then but the bacon strips into thirds and use the bacon to wrap around the two halves of the tater tots to keep it together.

Next, in a small mixing bowl, combine the brown sugar and chili powder in a bowl and roll the bacon wrapped tater tots in the brown sugar mixture and then place them on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper with the seam side down.

Continue to make up the tater tots until you run out of bacon.

Then place the cookie sheet in the oven at 400 degrees for 20 minutes.

Halfway through at 10 minutes remove the cookie sheet form the oven and carefully flip the tater tots over to allow the bacon to cook on the other side until it is nice and crispy.

Once the bacon looks done to your liking, remove the pan from the oven and serve them warm with the sauce.

To make the sauce, combine the mayonnaise, ketchup, horseradish, paprika, salt, oregano, black pepper, and hot sauce all in a small mixing bowl until it is well combined.

Keep the sauce in the fridge until you are ready to serve it with the tater tots.

To save time on the party day, could I prep these ahead of time and then freeze them until I'm ready to bake? Maybe thaw in the fridge overnight the night before?

  3. Cyd says:

I think they would freeze well after reading over the ingredients. We have only made them on the day of the party. Let us know how they turn out. I'm sure it will be just fine.

  4. Kali Holmes says:

  6. Susie Quentin says:

Have you ever left the horseradish out of the sauce for people who aren’t the biggest fans? I’m wondering if it would ruin the magic of the secret sauce?

  7. Cyd says:

Your sauce will still be delicious without the horseradish.

FAQs

Why aren't my tater tots getting crispy? ›

You want them crispy, tater tots need to be cooked at a high temperature for this to happen. 375-400F is great, I find 375F the sweet spot to get them crispy but to also cook the inside before the outside burns.

Should I thaw tater tots before cooking? ›

Remember to never defrost your tots before cooking them. This leads to sogginess, not crispiness. For the same reason, if you're cooking them in an oven, be sure to use the top rack for ultimate crisping.

How do I get the crispiest tater tots? ›

A slightly longer cook time makes the most delicious difference in both the taste and texture of tater tots. A longer cook time will cause the tots to shrink and dry out a little, which makes them even crispier all around on the outside with a potato-y center that's more dense and creamy.

How do you keep tater tots from getting soggy? ›

To prevent frozen tater tots from becoming soggy while baking, make sure to spread them out in a single layer on the baking sheet. Crowding them together can trap steam and lead to sogginess.

Are tater tots better in the oven or air fryer? ›

To the surprise of absolutely no one, air fryer tater tots are even better than oven-baked. They're ready in way less time, are supremely crispy and delicious, and are by far the best way to mimic deep-fried restaurant tots at home.

How to get crispy tots in the oven? ›

Brush/mist each tot with olive oil, be generous. Transfer to the oven and bake 10-12 minutes, slide a spatula underneath the tots, then flip and bake 10 more minutes. Flip once to the uncooked side, bake 10-12 minutes, until golden and crisp.

Why can't you put tater tots in the microwave? ›

Don't Use the Microwave!

Tater tots and French fries never taste the same when microwaved. It's where all of those legends about being unable to reheat potato products comes from. You're left with a mushy soggy mess, and no one likes that. That's because heating fried foods in the microwave is never a good idea.

Can you pan fry tater tots? ›

Heat oil in pan until hot. Put in tater tots and stir frequently to cook & crisp evenly. Remove from oil with slotted spoon and drain on paper towel.

What makes tater tots stick together? ›

We know that what keeps the Tater Tots stuck together is a combination of two pretty sticky things: moist starches and proteins. The more they come in contact with each other, the stickier they become, and the tighter/gummier the Tater Tots will be.

Does Sonic deep fry their tater tots? ›

The crispy, craveable potato nuggets have a deep-fried crust and lightly salted flavor that makes them downright irresistible. Nobody does tots like Sonic.

How long should tater tots be in the oven? ›

Form the tater tots the same size, so they cook evenly. Smaller tots require less cooking time, while larger tots require additional time. Bake at 400 degrees for 12-15 minutes. Air fry at 400 degrees for 8 minutes.

Can you cook tater tots ahead of time? ›

Make ahead: The tater tots can be shaped ahead of time, then frozen in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet until solid. Store in an airtight container or freezer bag for up to 3 months. Fry directly from the freezer; add 1 more minute fry time for each batch.

What do you eat with tater tots? ›

Tots add a nice crunch to any sandwich, especially a melty grilled cheese. Change up the meat and cheese depending on what you and your kid's like. Grilled ham and Swiss sandwiches, and turkey cheddar melts, are both even better with tots.

How do you know when tater tots are done frying? ›

Fry until they're golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes, turning occasionally for even cooking. Remove the tater tots from the oil using a slotted spoon and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess oil.

Are you supposed to fry tater tots? ›

The best way to cook tater tots is to submerge them in 350 degree cooking oil until they are golden brown and crispy, drain and apply salt. Any other method is a waste of tots.

What is the best temperature to fry tater tots? ›

Heat oil in a deep fryer or large saucepan to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lower potato nuggets carefully into the hot oil in batches, about 5 to 10 at a time. Fry until golden brown and crispy, about 3 to 4 minutes.

Are frozen tater tots already deep fried? ›

There's no need to add extra oil to frozen tater tots. They are already deep fried before freezing, so they will release plenty of oil to crisp up as they cook. What are tater tots? Tater tots are bite-sized little potatoey pillows made from shredded potatoes.
